They also discuss the necessity and the challenges of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Aber warum erzählen wir uns überhaupt Geschichten über Täter:innen, welche soziale und moralische Funktion erfüllen sie? Was ist die ‚Aufgabe‘ der Literatur in diesem Zusammenhang? Und wie weit reicht ihre Autonomie?

Der Literaturwissenschaftler Sebastian Schönbeck moderiert die Lesung der beiden Autor:innen und führt das anschließende Gespräch mit ihnen.
Die Lesung war Teil des Workshops "A Case for Empathy? Facing the Perpetrator in Literature, Culture, and History", den die Literaturwissenschaftlerin Saskia Fischer (Hannover) am ZiF veranstaltet hat.

However, while there appears to be a general consensus that AI-supported systems ought to be safe, we also observe fierce disagreement about which risks should be considered and what constitutes viable mitigation strategies. In other words: there is an urgent need to understand what both risk and safety mean in the context of AI.

In this episode cognitive scientist Benjamin Paaßen (Bielefeld), computational neuroscientist Elizabeth Herbert (München) and Olle Häggström, Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Gothenburg University, talk about the difficulties of defining risk and safety, about the range of risks that should be considered, as well as strategies to enhance AI-safety across technical, social and legal dimensions. They also reflect on the necessity and the challenges of interdisciplinary collaboration to make progress with this endeavor.

]]> Erinnern, Erinnerungskultur, Schuld, Vergangenheit, Engagement, Lesung no no no no bb745d9a10ac44a0898ebc4ef27d0093 Episode #20: Von Koffein bis Ritalin: Leistungssteigerung via Neuroenhancement? Koffein oder vielleicht sogar etwas Ritalin vor der nächsten Klausur? Der Versuch, mit vermeintlich leistungssteigernden Substanzen die Erfolgsaussichten etwa bei Prüfungen zu verbessern, wird als Neuroenhancement bezeichnet. Damit ist der Einsatz medizinischer Maßnahmen gemeint, z. B. eben Substanzeinnahme oder auch Neurotechnologie, die darauf abzielen, die kognitiven oder motorischen Fähigkeiten oder auch einfach die Stimmung zu verbessern.

In den letzten Jahren hat man das immer wieder gehört, was natürlich schnell den Eindruck erzeugt, die Gesellschaft sei schon voller Neuroenhancer. Ist das aber wirklich so? Wie verbreitet ist Neuroenhancement in der Gesellschaft? Und wie gefährlich ist die Nutzung dieser Maßnahmen?

Zu diesen und vielen weiteren Fragen rund um die Thematik hat im ZiF ein Workshop stattgefunden mit dem Titel „Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Neuroenhancement: Current Developments and Impact on the Individual and Society“, geleitet vom Sozialwissenschaftler Guido Mehlkop, der Philosophin Saskia Nagel und dem Soziologen Sebastian Sattler, die in dieser Folge über die Realitäten des Neuroenhancements sprechen.

Woher kommt das Bedürfnis, Menschen nach Kategorien sortieren zu wollen, die häufig in Stereotypen münden? Wie entstehen bestimmte Stereotype und wie setzen sie sich durch? Aus welchen unterschiedlichen Perspektiven kann man sie in wissenschaftlicher Hinsicht betrachten?

A research group at ZiF has worked on this topic for two years under the title “Normalizing the Far Right”. In this episode, which is to be understood in the context of the last episode on this subject with Paula Diehl and Birgit Sauer, various fellows from different scientific backgrounds and with different research foci answer questions around the topic of normalization of right-wing positions.
