#81 AZL Fire and Blasttest for EV Battery casings (English)

22.05.2023 12 min Staffel 5 Episode 37

Zusammenfassung & Show Notes

Design engineer: are you working on an EV battery these days?

Then you know the risks that are inherently involved. It is an extremely rare case, but if your battery catches fire, we want to make sure that passengers are safe.

At AZL Aachen GmbH | Excellence in Lightweight Production I looked the design engineers over their shoulders and you can, too, because I shot a video for you.

The specimen that were under fire (flame at almost 1200° Celsius) had varying results.

Fibreglass-honeycombs lasted merely one and a half minutes, while an aluminum plate made it at least to 2.5 minutes.

As with the droptower test in yesterdays crash simulation where the dart was angled, there is also another complication in the fire test.

Fire is not enough. There is also tension on the part. Therefore the engineers fire-test the parts typically with a lot of tension.

The third specimen tested in the fire and blast condition is a carbon composite.

Learn in the video how it came out in the test.

What's your guess? Better or worse than the other two?

Make your guess first and then enjoy the demonstration and the interview with Philipp Fröhlig, who is originally from the Motorsport industry.

Why did we go to the maximum length in the videos and used the complete 15 minutes?

The reason is simple. If a picture tells you a thousand words than a movie tells you a complete book volume or a library full of books.

Watch part 1 of the droptower test that proves how strong carbon composites are (Link below) on an angled impact.

Both videos are also on our Composites Lounge LinkedIn page and YouTube playlist.

Now take the opportunity to talk to the AZL team on JEC World this week. They have all the samples with them to show you.

I thank Dr. Kai Fischer for opening the doors for the public and wish them a safe trip to Paris.
