South America is a continent of grand images: rainforest, the Andes, carnival, Machu Picchu.

Yet between the Atlantic and the Andes there are places that shift this picture. Towns and settlements where Europe still lives on. Neighborhoods where Japan is part of everyday life. Enclaves that seem frozen in time. Places where languages, architecture and traditions have endured – sometimes visible in the streetscape, sometimes hidden behind facades and family histories.
